While you are trying to figure out where you left off before Christmas, keep in mind that a new Harmonized Tariff Schedule is now in effect for 2017. The new HTS is available online. For those of you still relying on that paper copy, it is also available from the Government Publishing Office. The updated version contains all of the cumulative changes made since January 2016. There are numerous changes to a variety of different chapters, so be sure to review the change record posted here and update your classification matrix accordingly. Updates to the Schedule B have not yet been released.

In addition to the US HTS changes, the World Customs Organization (WCO) Harmonized System committee issues amendments every five years and 2017 is the year for those amendments. The 233 sets of amendments became effective on January 1, 2017 and affect a variety of different sectors. This will be the 6th edition issued by the WCO. The new Harmonized System Nomenclature, used by over 200 countries worldwide for classifying goods, has now been posted by the WCO and can be accessed here.

If you need any assistance in decoding the changes or in classifying your products, Export Solutions Inc. has a team of experts ready to assist you in doing that. Contact us today!
