Many years ago, before starting Export Solutions, I was responsible for trade compliance at an international company. In that role, I had a variety of encounters with outside consultants who, in my opinion, were of little or no use to our organization.
These firms were good at quoting excerpts from the regulations, but they did not understand our business. They made little – if any – attempt to help us apply the rules to our processes, products and technologies. These consultants were always eager to say, “You can’t do that.” Yet they rarely provided me with ideas for what could work. Instead, I was left trying to figure out how to establish my own program for compliance.
